By the River Bank
The man sat swinging his feet
idly over the edge of the wharf. A Dragonfly fluttered past and bees hummed
contentedly among the Foxgloves nearby. A Trout plopped lazily in the still
afternoon sun to catch an unwary fly. A Skylark sang merrily high above the
tranquil scene.
This beautiful picture was completed with the pretty form of a woman resting under the shade of a huge willow tree. Relaxed and gentle was her face as she happily lay back and stared up into the leafy tops.
Whilst the cool summer breeze softly touched the couple’s faces, the Sun sent fingers of love to both of them. Their smiles were rosy and satisfied as they quietly rested.
The man’s cheery face went from smile of happiness to smile of sorrow. Something was troubling him. Suddenly he seemed to grasp his feelings and his wits together and gave a huge sigh.
“What’s troubling you Jamie?” the woman asked.
“Not much my dear, not really much,” was the soft reply. “I am just trying to think.”
Quietly and tenderly the woman moved to Jamie’s side and sat down with her feet also dangling above the calm water. Her arm crept around his shoulder and she pulled him to her as she whispered, “What is it Jamie? Please tell me.”
A Kingfisher gave a rasping shrill cry from a dead tree across the river and the couple watched the steel blue flash of the birds body enter the water and reappear a second later with a plump fish.
The man turned slowly to look the young woman in the eye. “Rachel” he murmured with deep emotion. “Rachel, we have come to love each other so very much. Don’t you agree?”
Sunbeams danced off the water to reflect in the rosy blush spreading across the young woman’s face as she gazed into Jamie’s serious eyes.
"Yes Jamie, we were obviously made for each other. God has designed us to think the same way, to act the same way and to love the same way. We are even. We are equal…”
At this point the pretty lass lowered her gaze and stared into the quiet water below.
Jamie grasped her hand in both of his and whispered softly.
“All that I have longed for is in you. All that I have prayed for is in you. All that I am would be made perfect if I had you by my side each day.”
He whistled distractedly through his teeth before continuing. “But there is a great gulf between your homeland and my homeland. Sadly we cannot proceed. Because of love and honour for each others families, I cannot pursue you. Owing to the distance it would break either your families or my families’ heart and I am not prepared to hurt anyone.”
Rachel gave Jamie’s hand a squeeze. “I know… and thank-you for thinking that way.”
She smiled contentedly. “But don’t let us worry, we must leave it in Gods capable hands… lets wait on Him and see if he works a miracle.
"If God does work a miracle it will be so very beautiful… but if He doesn’t, at least we have a special friendship that will last through into eternity.”
Jamie’s eyes twinkled and his teeth showed in a very broad smile as he said, “Gosh, you are a wonder! You really are… you always know how to cheer me up and make me smile again. Your presence is like the very best medicine!”
