Wee Willy and his Daddy
The frost crackled underfoot as the tall man stepped closer to the window to listen. Blackbirds and thrushes could be heard singing in the nearby hedgerow as the sound of a youthful voice floated out into the early morning air. The man looked into the gloomy interior to see a little boy kneeling with his hands clasped together in prayer in the old stable.
“Dear Jesus, you know I fight with Jack next door, and I tease his sister Janet. I don’t mean to be naughty. But Jesus, can you somehow, anyhow make me a man like my Daddy… I want to make my Mummy and Daddy so proud of me.
"To do that I guess I have to become more like you. Father in Heaven, please come and live within me and make me a good lad. Take away the naughty thoughts and fill my heart with pleasant things. You can make me guard the sick, poor and needy, love the wicked, and tell folks about your wonderful saving grace.”
A soft tender look had swept across the tall mans brow. His hand rose to his eye to brush a sudden tear away. It was the little fellow’s Daddy standing there.
Wee Willy was only 7 years old, but he had already become accountable to the Lord. Daddy Johnson knew he no longer needed to worry about his scamp of a son. He knew Willy would take all his problems to the Master.
He left the window and went round to the door. Entering the stable and with a heart full of emotion Daddy Johnson bent to touch the small boy on the shoulder.
“Sonny!”
Willy looked round in surprise. “Yes Daddy?”
“Please may I kneel with you?”
“Of course Daddy!”
The father lowered his large form into the straw and smiled loving at his son. Patting him on the face he whispered,
“Wee Willy, I also have something to tell God… so let us bend our heads and pray.”
It was a beautiful sight, the tall dark gentleman and the merry faced little chap kneeling side by side in the straw in the old stables. Such faith and trust each had for the other. The boy’s simple faith and trust blended with the man’s thanks and love to create a particularly moving scene. These two knew each others hearts and loved each other dearly.
There was silence for a moment, and then Daddy Johnson cleared his throat to speak.
“Father above, we thank thee for your blessing upon us this day. We thank thee for the good things and the bad things. We know you are supreme and good, and we surrender our hearts to thee. Do with us as you wish. We are servants of your, the Almighty God.
“You have heard my son’s prayer today. You know it comes from an honest heart, and you know that he wants you to be Lord and Master of his life. Please Jesus, please make our Wee Willy a man who will teach others of your wonderful goodness. Teach him by your Spirit to do good all his life long, and never evil. Protect him Lord and watch over him because his Mummy and I won’t be around forever.”
Daddy Johnson put his arm tightly round his son as he continued.
“Wee Willie is all we have Lord, but I give him to you to do as you will. He is a son I am so very proud of… please make him a man I will be just as proud of. It has been a hard life to get this far, but with your love I think we have made it… Thanks Jesus for dying in our place at Calvary. Thanks for everything! In your precious name, Amen.”
The little fellow looked up into his Daddies eyes. “Daddy?”
“Yes my Son?”
“I love you my Daddy!”
The tears sprang from Daddies eyes as he clutched his son to him. He rocked back and forth on his knees as he murmured, “My darling Willy, I love you more than you could imagine! Just remember to love Jesus more than your own Mummy and Daddy.”
It was a happy pair who left the stable to go about their day. Daddy Johnson was carrying Wee Willy on his shoulders. Their smiles would have melted the coldest hearts. They were singing joyfully together with voices lifted in praise. We smile as they pass us and enter the lovely old farmhouse.
Mummy is inside with breakfast waiting. We cannot enter with them, but looking in the window we can see the table laid for 3. We see Daddy lower Willy to the ground and stoop to give his wife a loving kiss. Her eyes light up as her husband starts to tell her the story of what they have been doing in the stable. Then we see her wipe her eyes with her apron. Suddenly Daddy says something to his family… and we see them all come together and hug in a group. Daddy wraps his arms round his wee family and thanks God for them.
It is high time we leave… we have seen enough. We will leave the little family to have their breakfast knowing that another small child has joined the ranks of the Commander and Chief, Jesus Christ.
