Sharing a Blessing
The tall young woman tickled the wee fellow’s toes. He giggled with glee. A haunting look swept across the woman’s brow before she laughed at the little lad and tweaked his nose. There was deep sadness buried in her heart. For the lad wasn’t her little boy. It was her nephew… and she loved him as her own child.
The child’s mother noticed the woman’s sad expression and reaching over she murmured softly, “One day you will have your own… but in the meantime, please share my little boy.”
The woman looked up and whispered back, “Are you sure?”
The lad’s mummy smiled happily, “Very sure! Your brother and I love you very much. I love you like my own sister, so yes, I will share my little boy with you until God gives you your own.”
In a rocking chair by the fireside was the child’s Grandmother. Cosy and warm by the flickering firelight she was knitting frantically. She was knitting baby clothes for her tiny Grandson yonder. Her ear was listening to the younger woman’s conversation, and she flashed a knowing look across at her husband who was reading the evening newspaper. He gave a beaming smile before lowering his head to continue reading. An observant watcher would have noticed his eyes were not focused on the words he was reading… and that his lips were moving slowly as he uttered a silent prayer of grateful thanks to the Lord above.
At the kitchen table the small boy’s father was busy with some mechanical repairs. Old newspapers were protected Grandma’s old oak table from oil stains whilst a soldering iron burned with a smouldering glow. Wreaths of blue smoke rose up around the young fellows face as he worked.
He also was listening to the woman folk. Every now and then he would steal a look across at his wee son and wonder how he came to be so blessed. When he heard his wife whisper those loving words to his sister it made him smile inside. He knew he was a lucky fellow, and he knew his wife was too. They were so blessed by God, he wanted to share the blessing...
Grandfather lowered his newspaper and coughed careful to get his families attention.
“Have you ever thought of what a blessing is?” he asked. “Have you ever wondered why God gives us blessings?” He paused and looked around before continuing.
“A blessing is something that God gives to make His children happy. If we do not share the blessing it soon becomes a curse. By sharing the blessing with others it blesses them!”
Grandma twinkled at her family, “Your father is right… to share a blessing is a way to love others. We all love each other, so we bless each other and pass the basket of happiness around.”
“Mom speaks the truth,” spoke a voice from amidst the smoke at the table. “Passing the flame of friendship only makes people happy.”
The little fellow giggled merrily again and the two young women looked at each other and smiled. It was a wonderful thing to have such a supporting family, and a family who cared enough to love them, to protect them and to bless them.
Not every family is like this one, but it is the way God would love your family to be. Why wait? Why not be like this family? It would be worth the effort! I know of one family like this and can tell you from personal experience what a blessing it is to be living a daily life the way God originally designed it to be.
A family who lives for God, with God and in God has no regrets!
